We work with too many individuals who are longing for marriage coaching. The problem is only one of the individuals in the couple are actually interested in working on the issues they are facing. It leaves the one person willing to seek coaching in a very difficult position. How can a marriage improve if only one person is putting in the effort?
This is where the power of perseverance to keep standing on truth and the Word of God is so crucial.
First, it starts with me. That’s right. It’s way too easy to point blame at the spouse who isn’t willing to come into the coaching session. We say things like, “If they would just change, my marriage would be better!”
There is some truth to that. If the unwilling spouse had a change of heart and was now willing to engage in repairing the marriage, things would be easier. However, if we are solely focused on the change in the other person, I’m missing what God is trying to do in me. There is a process God is doing in us - a purification process.
He wants us to look more like Jesus. When I first gave my life to Jesus as my Lord I was forgiven and redeemed by the blood of Jesus by His amazing grace (Ephesian 1:7). In addition, however, I realized there was still work God wanted to do in me for my character to look more like Jesus. He loves you too much to leave you there.
For that spouse who feels alone, don’t give up.
It may feel like there is no hope. Don’t stop praying. Your prayers are powerful. God hears you and your cries for mercy (Psalm 116:1). He is growing out His perseverance in you. As stated in the last post, we are exhorted to pursue perseverance in 1 Timothy 6:11. God is growing the fruit of the Holy Spirit in you, such as patience and faithfulness, to grow your dependance on Him even deeper.
Jesus loves you and sees you. Don’t give up.
