Following Jesus is a journey where we are to keep striving. I don’t mean to keep striving to earn God’s approval. We are justified by Jesus alone, since “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB).
However, after we are justified by Jesus, we then enter into sanctification - the process of being transformed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Hebrews 12:1 has been coming to mind quite often lately exhorting us to put aside the things in our lives that are slowing us down and the sin that is entangling us so we can run the race well that is set before us.
We are all in a race - a race that requires perseverance.
Verse 2 continues by saying we are to look to Jesus - set our eyes on Him, just as a runner would set their eyes on the finish line. But are you willing to throw off the weight and the sin in your life?
Pursuing Jesus requires me to take action. The weight and the sin in my life has only produced more heartache and more garbage. It is a cruel master.
Let us run after the true Master, the One who has saved us, who has set us free.
Throw off the weight and the sin in your life today. Let’s run the race well.
