Are you building the right way? By reading that question it implies there is a right way to build and a wrong way to build. That can be offensive to some people. However, the truth is we are either going to be using our strength or someone else’s to build our life.
Psalm 127:1 has been coming to my mind. I think the culture we live in facilitates a mindset of “I need to keep striving”, “I need to keep working harder”, “I need to find my worth from what I do”. Are striving and working hard and doing worthy work noble things? Of course they are. But am I using those things to find my worth?
"Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain". Psalm 127:1
This verse is a humble reminder that unless the Lord builds the house, I am laboring for nothing if I build it on my own strength. Unless the Lord is guarding me, I am staying awake and guarding for nothing.
I can find myself trying on my own strength to make the building strong and appealing. However, in the process, I can find myself getting anxious whether it’s going to turn out the way I want it to. We are to take action, but are we relying on the Lord’s strength to do it or are we relying on our own strength?
So ask yourself bluntly:
How am I building? Who is the one guarding me?
Lord, would You help us to keep our minds and eyes on You to build well. Apart from you we can do nothing (John 15:5). Would you help us to persevere in Your strength?
We need you, Lord.
